What is a PAYE construction worker?
A PAYE worker is anyone who pays their National Insurance and tax as they earn.
Can I get a tax rebate as a PAYE builder?
If you are a PAYE construction worker, you are entitled to a tax rebate on a number of expenses. Even better, you can backdate claims to anything within the last four years.
What can I claim tax on as a PAYE builder?
There are four main categories that PAYE builders can claim for:
- Travel: If you drive to a temporary site in your own vehicle, you can claim mileage on your fuel, and if you get public transport, you can claim back the tax on ticket costs.
- Subsistence: In the same way, you are entitled to claim back expenses for your meals while travelling for work (also known as subsistence costs) and any accommodation costs you incur too. These costs have a set limit.
- Maintenance: You can also claim back tax on maintenance for tools, equipment, or uniform, as long as it’s related to a specific job and is necessarily incurred as an expense. Examples include replacing or repairing a small tool or having your liveried clothing laundered. Tools can be anything you use for work, from drills to tape measures. - Profession: Lastly, you can claim back anything you’ve spent on your profession. These could include things like trade union fees or magazine subscriptions.
